length, width, or distance？
ある物体の一番長い部分の寸法は "length" だと、ずっと信じていた。
なので、プリンターの用紙の幅に沿って伸びるヘッドの幅は length だと思っていた。
ところが native check で、寸法には
length x width ｘ height で表すべきものと
depth ｘ width ｘ height で表すべきものとがあり、
プリンターのヘッドの長い部分は "width" だと指摘された。
使う人が向き合った場合に横に伸びる寸法は width ということなんだろう。
幅に対して前後方向が長く伸びている場合はその前後方向の長さは length、短い場合はdepth ということかと、自分なりに理解した。
それから、「ここでは、用紙の幅はA4用紙の短辺の長さである」という文を
"The width of the printing paper sheet is the length of the shorter sides of the four sides of a A4 sheet."
と書いたら、length は最も長い寸法のことだし、width = length はおかしいだろ、とも指摘された。
どうも、depth ｘ width ｘ height で寸法を表す場合は length は使わないようだ。
なら、どう書くかというと、
× the length of the shorter sides → ○ the distance of the shorter sides
となる。

Use "length" only to denote the longest dimension unless format is H x D x W.
Use "distance" to denote a quantity of a dimension.
と念を押されたのだった。
