"such as"の限定用法と非限定用法

かってに限定用法とか非限定用法とかという言葉を使ってしまったが、本来は、such as の前にカンマがあるかどうかで意味が異なる。

以下は"The ACS Style Guide" に記載されていた説明の訳文である。

 “such as” や “including” で導かれる句は、制限的である場合と非制限的である場合がある。前者の場合はカンマで区切らない。後者の場合はカンマで区切られる。

Potassium compounds such as KCl are strong electrolytes; other potassium compounds are weak electrolytes.

Previously, we described a mathematical model including a description of chlorophyll degradation in foods.

Divalent metal ions, such as magnesium(II) and zinc(II), are located in the catalytic active sites of the enzymes.

Hydrogen-bonded complexes, including proton-bound dimers, are well-known species.

最初の2つの文は、"such as”を用いた句がないと理解できないので、制限的である。３つめ、４つめの文は 、"such as"  以降の句がなくても意味が通り、非制限的に使われている。

つまり、such as の前にカンマがない場合は、like 「～のような」の意味になり、カンマがある場合は、「例えば～」という意味で、such as の後ろには具体的な例が記載される。

このルールの通りに使い分けていないことも多いようにも思うのだけれど。
