connected to, connected with, connected by
以前、「Aに接続されたB」という句を "B connected with A"と訳した際に、Nativeのチェックで "connected to”に直されたことがあった。それ以降、"connected to" と"connected with"の違いがよくわからなくなっていた。
そんなある日、どっちも表現も使っている文献を目にして、改めて調べてみた。
このサイトに書かれていることが正しいのかどうかはわからないが、なるほどと思うので、メモとして訳しておく。
① The island and the city are connected with a bridge.
② The island and the city are connected by a bridge.
①の文は "the island" と "the city"に焦点があてている。また、前置詞"with”は、the island" と "the city"が互いに"a bridge"を介していることを明確には示しておらず、単に、それぞれが"a bridge"と接続していると意味にすぎない。
②の文は"a bridge"に焦点を当てているといってもよく、"the island" と "the city"の２つが "bridge"によって繋がれていることが明確に示している。
the island と the city が 互いに "a bridge" で 繋がらていることを明確にするためには、
"the island is connected to the city by a bridge" または
"the island is connected with the city by a bridge"
が適切である。
③ The TV is connected to the computer.
④ The TV is connected with the computer.
"connect the end of one thing to the end of another thing" （端部同士をつなぐ）
の場合、”to”を使用し"with”は不可。反対語は "disconnect"
The hosepipe was connected to the kitchen tap.
機械をつなぐ の場合は
も ”to”を使用し"with”は不可。反対語は "disconnect"
Connect a machine to the electricity supply.
The computer is connected to the internet.
つまり、反対語がdisconnect の 場合は "to"を使用すること。
２つの間を移動できるようにつなぐ場合はどちらも可能。
The bathroom is connected with/to the bedroom.
a bus connection with the the early train 「早い時間の電車とのバスの接続」
など、飛行機や電車の乗り換えのためのconnection の場合は "with"
⑤ Somebody is connected to someone.
⑥ Somebody is connected with someone.
関わり合い（association) などの場合は
I didn’t connect you at first with your father because you have different surnames.
どちらも可
By some people, he will always be connected with that TV programmer.
以上のことを頭に入れて、改めてジーニアスを見てみると、同じことが書かれていたのだった。
そして、なぜ "connected to"に直されたのかを漸く納得したのだった。
