a composition of matter
組成物のクレームを訳すのは意外と難しい。特に、初出の語の冠詞には a/an を使うことと指定されている場合には。（基本的に初出の語は不定冠詞を使うのは当たり前で、初出にtheを使わないように文を構成するのだけれど、本来備わっているものや性質だったりには例外だ）
例えば 「AとBとを含む組成物であって、有機溶媒含有量が〇%以下である組成物」などという場合、
A composition comprising: A; and B, wherein the organic solvent content is 〇% or less.
何も指定がなければ、こんなふうに書いてしまう。しかし、絶対 初出の the を認めてくれないケースもある。そういう場合、the organic solvent content は問題である。かといって、an organic solvent content とすると、かなりあいまいな文になる。
A composition comprising: A; B; and 〇% or less of an organic solvent.
とすると、含有量〇%以下の有機溶媒が必ず含まれると解釈される恐れがある。
で、苦肉の策。
A composition comprising: A; and B, wherein the composition has an organic solvent content of 〇% or less.
